Below are some stupid quotes that were said in the past by smart and important people.

  • “There is no reason for any individual to have a computer in their home.” – Kenneth Olsen, president/founder of digital equipment corporation, 1977
  • “Airplanes are interesting toys but of no military value.” – Marshal Ferdinand Foch, French military strategist and future WW1 Commander, 1911
  • “Man will never reach the moon regardless of all future scientific advances.” – Dr. Lee De Forest, Inventor of the audio tube and father of radio, 02-11-1967
  • “Television won’t be able to hold on to any market it captures after the first six months.  People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night.” – Darryl F Zanuck, head of 20th century fox, 1946
  • “For the majority of people, the use of tobacco has a beneficial effect.” – Dr. Ian G Macdonald, Los Angeles surgeon, Newsweek 11-18-1969
  • “The earth is the center of the universe.” – Ptolemy, the great Egyptian astronomer, 2nd century
  • “Everything that can be invented has been invented.” – Charles H. Duell, U.S. Commissioner of patents, 1899

Here is another common list of statements made by young adults.

  • “No one in my family has ever gone to college.  I’d be crazy to think I could make it.”
  • “It’s no use.  My stepdad and I will never get along.  We’re just too different.”
  • “Being smart is a ‘white’ thing.”
  • “My teacher is out to get me.”
  • “She is so pretty – I’ll bet she’s a jerk.”
  • “You can’t get ahead in life unless you know the right people.”
  • “Me? Thin? Are you kidding? My whole family is full of fat people.”
  • “It’s impossible to get a god job around here ‘because nobody wants to hire a teen.”

What do these two lists of statement have in common?

  • They are all perceptions about the way things are
  • They are all inaccurate or incomplete (even though the people who said them were convinced they’re true.

What is a Paradigm?

  • It is another word for perceptions
    • The way you see something
    • (your point of view, frame of reference, or belief)
  • Paradigms create limitations.
  • It is like wearing glasses with the wrong prescription.
    • That lens affects how you see everything else.

What are some paradigms of myself?

  • Are they helping me or hindering me?

What are some paradigms I have of others? How does this affect our relationship?

  • Share examples
  • Include other typical/current/relatable examples
    • Friend who becomes distant, to later find out her parents had been going through a messy divorce. (How does a perception change?)
    • Ordering a package of cookies and a man sitting at your table eating from your cookies without permission, only to find out later in the day that you still had your cookies unopened in your bag.

What are paradigms of my life?

  • “What do I spend my time thinking about?”
  • “Who or what is my obsession?”
  • Whatever is most important to you will become your paradigm, your glasses (your life center).

What does it means to be friend-centered, stuff-centered, sports/hobbies centered, boyfriend girlfriend-centered, School-centered, etc.?

  • Give an example(s)
    • Comments
  • Any Discoveries? What are the positives and negatives of centering all your attention on these things?
  • What center can we focus on and count on?
  • What does it mean to be Principled-Centered?
