Modern research has demonstrated that the mind does indeed influence the healing process. We are also realizing that for the healing process to be complete, the entire spectrum of consciousness needs to be complete.
- The entire spectrum of consciousness needs to be involved, including the human spirit
- Whole person medicine
- Look at the whole picture, all facets of a person’s life, all factors that contribute to well-being.
When the art of healing is at its best, it has the potential to bring out the best in us, and when transformations do occur, it is often the ill person who can teach the well person how to live well.
Our real power has to do with our ability to evoke people’s own innate ability to heal. Illness changes an individual.
- People are always growing and an illness has a tremendous influence on that process.
- Suffering often enables people to come to a deep realization about themselves, their relationships, and the purpose of life.” (Dr. Remen)
A serious illness can even strip away the habitual layers of one’s personality to expose a wiser self.
- “Most of us have been afraid to look within. It is as if we have feared that at our core there is something unworthy. Yet many people find, in their encounter with illness, a true greatness, which may take them by surprise. It has grown in them despite their fear, anger, and bitterness. It is possible in a time of physical vulnerability to have an accelerated emotional, intellectual, and even spiritual healing. The body may become less and yet the person may become more whole. It happens all the time.” – Dr. Remen
“Emotions are really in the body. They are expressed in the body and are part of the body. – Candace Pert
- Receptor sites in the body. That is why when people say they have a “gut feeling” about something, they often do – because the stomach and gut are dotted with receptor sites.
- Happy or sad feelings do not remain in the head. They affect us right down to our individual cells.
- This communication network is directly linked to the immune system and so is very relevant to the healing process.

Heart disease could reverse artery blockages by changing your lifestyle alone. “I don’t think it requires a catastrophic illness to change. I do think it requires pain to change in most cases. – Dan Ornish –
If your life is just the way you want it to be, why change it? There’s no shortage of pain or suffering in the world. The issue is getting people to be aware.
- That’s why I believe awareness of pain is the first step in healing.
- The second step is the awareness that you can do something about it.
- The third is the awareness that it really makes a difference if you do.”
“Healing comes when you open your heart. Opening the heart means that you let down those barriers that keep you isolated and keep you thinking you are separate.”
- It is the perception of isolation that seems to cause the most emotional pain.
- Replace a sense of separation with a sense of unity with all creation. Experience being part of something larger than life.
With such mind-body techniques such as yoga, meditation, a guided imagery we can learn to pay attention to not only their physical bodies but also to their emotions, reactions, and the way they live their lives.
